Conjunctivitis (red eye): what you need to know

What is it

Conjunctivitis is usually self-limiting and rarely leads to serious complications. Symptoms may last 7-10 days, but usually resolve within 5 days. Self-limited infections can be treated without medical attention.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis

  • Redness
  • Itching/burning
  • Discharge/tearing

Self-care measures

  • Do not rub or touch your eyes
  • Stop using contact lenses until symptoms go away
  • Apply cold compresses
  • Do not use eye makeup
  • Use artificial tears or saline eye drops

When to seek care from a medical provider

  • If you have any loss of vision (not just blurriness)
  • If you have a known injury to your eye
  • If symptoms last more than 7-10 days
  • If you have moderate/severe pain in one or both eyes
