What is it
Conjunctivitis is usually self-limiting and rarely leads to serious complications. Symptoms may last 7-10 days, but usually resolve within 5 days. Self-limited infections can be treated without medical attention.
Symptoms of conjunctivitis
- Redness
- Itching/burning
- Discharge/tearing
Self-care measures
- Do not rub or touch your eyes
- Stop using contact lenses until symptoms go away
- Apply cold compresses
- Do not use eye makeup
- Use artificial tears or saline eye drops
When to seek care from a medical provider
- If you have any loss of vision (not just blurriness)
- If you have a known injury to your eye
- If symptoms last more than 7-10 days
- If you have moderate/severe pain in one or both eyes
