Most coughs in adults are caused by viruses.
The cough may be accompanied by other symptoms of a respiratory infection (the common cold), such as fever, sore throat, and nasal congestion. Viral coughs are self-limiting and symptoms usually last 7-14 days, but some coughs may last up to 3-4 weeks. Self-limited viral infections can be treated without seeking medical attention.
The symptoms of Cough
- Cough that may produce mucus (mucus may be clear, white, yellow-gray, or green)
- Fatigue
- Other symptoms of the common cold (including stuffy, runny nose, sore throat, fever)
Self-care measures
- Get plenty of rest.
- Use an over-the-counter nasal saline spray or sinus rinse 1-2 times a day.
- Drink plenty of non-alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
- Avoid smoking, e-cigarettes, etc.
- Dextromethorphan and/or guaiacol.
- Use over-the-counter cough medicines that contain the following ingredients.
When to seek care from a medical provider
- Cough that lasts more than three weeks
- Fever (over 101 degrees Fahrenheit) with a significant cough for more than 72 hours.
- A cough that prevents you from sleeping.
- Coughing up blood.
- Chest pain.
- Wheezing or shortness of breath.
